Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." His belief highlights how education is a key factor in shaping a brighter future for the next generation. Around the world, many regions still face challenges in providing quality education, particularly in rural areas, leading to an increasing gap between students in different communities.
According to the International Cultural Education Foundation 環宇國際文化教育基金會 (ICEF), in Taiwan, 71.5% of children in rural or remote areas have limited access to educational resources. There is also a significant gap in literacy and digital access between students from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Another study by ICEF found that only about 30% of students in rural areas can answer fundamental academic aptitude questions.
At Teach First Taiwan, our mission is to provide equal educational opportunities for students across different regions, working to bridge the gap in access to education and support long-term academic success.
Teach First Taiwan offers long-term, one-on-one online mentorship for students in underserved areas. Our program covers a range of subjects, including math, arts, science, social studies, and English. Each student is carefully matched with a dedicated mentor for the entire academic year to ensure consistency and meaningful impact.
Our volunteer mentors come from diverse backgrounds and locations, collaborating with schools and institutions in need of additional educational support. We continuously seek new partnerships to expand our reach. Currently, we are working with organizations such as APcore Global Education and foundations like The Michelle Chiou Foundation 惠瑜慈善協會, Yellow Ribbon Network Association for Taiwan 台灣黃絲帶愛網關懷協會, Zheng Zan Academy Cultural and Educational Association Volunteer Team Foundation 正讚書院文教協會樂行志工隊, and Hanlin Education Foundation 翰林文教基金會. Together, we support students in more than 70 schools across Taiwan.

Our curriculum is designed to not only improve academic performance but also support students' personal growth and well-being. Aligning with the traditional educational framework, we cover core subjects such as science, math, social studies, English, Chinese, and the arts.
In addition to academics, we emphasize life skills, character development, and social awareness, aiming to nurture well-rounded individuals who can contribute positively to society.
According to ICEF, the gap in educational accessibility between urban and rural areas in Taiwan continues to widen. Remote areas often lack stable internet access and sufficient public transportation, making it harder to attract and retain teachers. Additionally, many low-income families in rural areas face economic hardships, with parents often working long hours, leaving children without adequate educational support at home.
Studies show that many students from underprivileged backgrounds live in households with unstable financial conditions, making it difficult for families to prioritize education. More than 13.3% of these households report no consistent income, which can limit access to learning opportunities.
A report by the Children's Welfare Alliance highlights disparities in educational resources, showing that:
15.7% of low-income households lack internet access.
48% of underprivileged children own fewer than 10 books at home, compared to urban children, who have access to more than twice the number of learning materials.
Despite ongoing efforts to address these gaps, significant challenges remain in ensuring equal access to quality education for all students.
